The Ancient Nordic Ritual That Christianity Forbade
In medieval Scandinavia, sitting alone outside could actually be a crime. Not simply sitting outside, of course, but attempting to communicate with spirits, the dead, or other supernatural beings.
This practice ...was known as útiseta, and medieval Norwegian and Icelandic laws explicitly prohibited sitting outside to awaken trolls.
But what was so dangerous about it?
In this episode of Tyrdom, we explore útiseta, Odin's search for wisdom among the dead, and the old Nordic understanding of a world filled with spiritual presence. We also look at how Christianity changed these traditions, and what the Finnish story of Väinämöinen and Antero Vipunen can tell us about the ancient pursuit of knowledge.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about útiseta isn't what people believed they might encounter in the darkness, but why someone wanted to stop them.

We Never Stopped Hunting Witches
The Scandinavian witch trials belong to a world we like to think we have left behind.
During the 17th century, accusations of witchcraft spread through communities. Neighbours accused neighbours. Children became ...witnesses. Suspicion became evidence, and once someone had been identified as a witch, almost anything could be interpreted as proof of their guilt.
But did the witch hunt really disappear?
In this video, I look at the Scandinavian witch trials, the extraordinary case of Ingeborg Pedersdotter, and the deeper human behaviour behind collective persecution.
The accusations have changed. The punishments have changed. The technology has changed.
But perhaps the phenomenon itself never disappeared.
Same phenomenon. Different technology.

The Melancholy of the Nordic Soul #Tungsinne #Vemod #melancholy #Heavymind
Tungsinne. A heaviness of the mind.
Not quite sadness. Not depression. Something closer to melancholy, introspection and a longing that can be difficult to explain.
Perhaps there is something distinctly Nordic about ...it.

You wake up in the middle of the night, unable to move or speak. There is a crushing pressure on your chest, and sometimes you can even sense someone else ...in the room.
Today we call it sleep paralysis.
In Nordic folklore, our ancestors had another explanation.
They called her Maran, the Mare.
And people are still describing remarkably similar experiences today.

Tungsinne: Understanding Nordic Melancholy
What is tungsinne?
Melancholy is probably the closest English word, but it does not quite capture the feeling. It is a certain heaviness of mind, a sense of longing, sadness and ...reflection that I have always recognised both in myself and in my Finnish father.
In this video, I explore the idea of Nordic melancholy and its relationship with concepts such as kaiho, haikeus and sisu. From the forests and long winters of the North to Ragnarök, silence, history and the experiences passed between generations, melancholy seems to occupy a curious place in the Nordic cultural landscape.
Perhaps tungsinne one describes the weight, and the other our ability to carry it.

The Mare: The Nordic Spirit That Comes While You Sleep
For centuries, people across the Nordic world spoke of the Mare, or Maran: a mysterious being that came during the night, sat upon the sleeper's chest and left them unable ...to move or call for help.
The belief reaches back into medieval Norse literature. In Ynglinga saga, the legendary king Vanlandi is even said to have been killed by a Mare after breaking his promise to Drífa in Finland.
Today, many of these old descriptions sound remarkably similar to what we call sleep paralysis.
In this video, I explore the Mare in Nordic folklore, the story of Vanlandi, later Scandinavian folk beliefs and why this ancient creature still feels strangely familiar in the modern world.

The Power of Words: Sanan Voima and the Wisdom of the Kalevala
In Finnish tradition, words were never seen as empty sounds.
The ancient concept of sanan voima: The power of words. It suggests that language does more than describe reality. It shapes ...how we think, how we relate to one another, and ultimately who we become.
Drawing on the Kalevala, Finnish folklore, and modern reflection, this video explores whether our ancestors understood something profound about speech that we have largely forgotten.
Perhaps the greatest power of words is not that they change the world directly...
...but that they change us.

Ancient DNA Reveals Finland’s Forgotten Connections
A new ancient DNA study published in Genome Biology offers a fascinating glimpse into the population history of southwestern Finland.
Led by researchers at the University of Turku, with contributions from ...the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and other institutions, the study examines ancient individuals mainly dating to the Early Medieval period.
The results point to remarkable population continuity in Finland, but also to movement and genetic connections across the Baltic Sea — including links with Scandinavia, Gotland, the eastern Baltic and the wider Fennoscandian world.
In this video I take a look at what the study actually tells us, what it does not tell us, and how it fits into the broader picture of Finland during and after the Viking Age.

How Do You Tell People You’re Pagan?
How do you tell people you’re pagan? A viewer asked me this recently, and my honest answer is: I rarely do.
Sitting beneath the tree I call Yggdrasil, I reflect on ...being pagan and an animist, when I choose to share my beliefs, and why spirituality doesn’t need to become your whole personality.
That question opens up a wider conversation about identity, the labels we put on each other, and staying grounded while exploring spiritual and esoteric paths. For me, that means remaining curious, functioning in everyday life, and keeping an anchor point to return to.
Like nature, spiritual growth moves in cycles. Sometimes we explore deeply; sometimes we need to come up for air and make sense of what we’ve learned.
How open are you about your beliefs? Do you talk about them freely, or wait until someone asks? Let me know in the comments—different perspectives are welcome.

Finland’s Greatest Viking-Age Treasure Has Been Found
Finland’s largest known Viking-Age coin hoard has been discovered near Sysmä — far inland from the coastal regions usually associated with long-distance trade.
The extraordinary find contains approximately 4.5 kilograms of ...silver and potentially thousands of coins, together with a silver arm ring, a bead, a fitting and hack silver.
But perhaps the most unusual detail is how the treasure was buried.
The objects had been placed inside two birch-bark containers, buried between stones around 45 centimetres beneath the ground — and separated by approximately twelve metres.
Was this simply wealth hidden during a time of danger? Did the two deposits belong to the same person? Or could the containers, landscape and deliberate separation suggest something more ritualistic?
The coins have not yet been cleaned, separated or precisely dated. For now, the reason they were buried remains a mystery.

A Viking Silver Hoard Was Hiding Beneath This Garden
A remarkable Viking Age silver hoard has been discovered in Rebild, northern Jutland — after a homeowner stumbled upon it while working in his garden.
The find contains around 18.5 kilograms ...of silver, including arm rings, silver bars, hacked silver, coins and even a small Thor’s hammer.
But who buried it? And why was such an enormous amount of wealth hidden here more than a thousand years ago?
Denmark may have a new record holder…
but Gotland still has something to say about that.
